Biography:

Blessed Innocent XI brought austerity, fiscal discipline, and moral seriousness to the papacy. He cut curial excess, resisted nepotism, and sought to strengthen both the spiritual and institutional credibility of the Holy See.

His pontificate is especially remembered for conflict with Louis XIV over the liberties of the Gallican Church, as well as for support given to Christian resistance against the Ottomans. He embodied a strong and principled papal posture toward absolutist monarchy.

Innocent XI’s legacy joins reform, international courage, and the later Church’s recognition of his sanctity.
