Pope Innocent XII

Pope Innocent XII was born with the given name of Antonio Pignatelli in the year 1615 A.D., and died in 1700 A.D. He began his reign as Pope in the year 1691 A.D. and ended his reign in the year 1700 A.D., during the Early Modern. Innocent XII was from Naples, and his papal number is: 242 out of 267 officially recognized Roman Catholic Popes.

Summary: Reforming pope who curtailed nepotism and cleaned up curial finances.

Biography:

Innocent XII pursued one of the most important internal reforms of the later Baroque papacy by sharply restricting nepotism. His constitution Romanum decet pontificem helped end the older pattern of lavish papal favoritism toward relatives.

He also sought financial rectitude and practical reform within the curia. These measures strengthened the credibility of the Holy See at the turn of the eighteenth century.

Innocent XII’s legacy is enduringly institutional: he helped make the papacy more disciplined and less dynastic.
