Biography:Gregory XVI was a Camaldolese monk and a strong defender of traditional papal authority during an age of revolution and liberal agitation. He opposed political modernity in many of its forms, fearing its consequences for faith and order.
At the same time, he significantly advanced missionary activity and the global reach of the Church. His pontificate therefore combined doctrinal defensiveness in Europe with evangelical expansion abroad.
Gregory XVI’s legacy is complex: he was anti-liberal in politics yet vigorous in extending the Church’s worldwide mission.
