Biography:

Callistus III, the first Borgia pope, came to office with the eastern crisis very much in mind after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople. He urged Christian rulers toward united resistance and supported military efforts against Ottoman expansion.

His pontificate also introduced members of his family into high office, a sign of the nepotism that would become an enduring theme of Renaissance papal politics. Even so, his earnest concern for Christendom’s defense shaped the spirit of his reign.

Callistus III’s legacy combines anti-Ottoman zeal with the dynastic tendencies characteristic of his time.
