The male superior of an abbey or autonomous monastic community. Traditionally regarded as the spiritual father of the monastery, an abbot governs according to the community’s rule, constitutions, and canon law. Some abbots receive an abbatial blessing and may possess limited ecclesiastical privileges associated with their office.
