One who is sent on a mission. In the New Testament the term refers especially to the Twelve chosen by Christ and to Saint Paul, who were commissioned as foundational witnesses of the Resurrection and teachers of the Gospel. Their ministry stands at the origin of the Church’s apostolic mission.
