Vintage Mid-Century Catholic Sick Call Crucifix with Original Last Rites Kit – c. 1955–1975
There are objects made simply to decorate a wall, and there are others made to wait quietly for the moments when they are needed most. This vintage Catholic Sick Call Crucifix, dating approximately to c. 1955–1975, belongs to the latter tradition—a household crucifix made not only as a visible profession of faith, but as a practical preparation for the arrival of a priest in a time of serious illness.
Crafted from richly finished hardwood with striking marbled faux-stone inlays, the crucifix has the substantial appearance characteristic of mid-century Catholic devotional furnishings. A traditional gold-tone cast metal corpus of Christ rests at its center beneath the familiar INRI plaque, while the warm wood and contrasting decorative panels give the piece a dignified presence suitable for a Catholic home, private chapel, rectory, or collection of religious antiques.
Its true purpose, however, is revealed when the crucifix is opened.
Concealed behind the cross is the original Sick Call or Last Rites kit, preserving the articles a Catholic household kept ready when a priest was summoned to minister to someone who was seriously ill or approaching death. The interior retains a glass holy water bottle, linen cloth, cotton, two devotional candles, and brass candle holders, an unusually meaningful survival because these smaller components were easily used, discarded, or separated from their crucifixes over the passing decades.
In the Catholic home, such a set could be prepared for the priest’s arrival when he came to administer the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, bring Viaticum when appropriate, or offer the Church’s prayers and pastoral care at the bedside. The candles could be placed in their holders, the holy water made ready, and the accompanying articles arranged nearby. What had hung unobtrusively upon the wall thus became part of the family’s preparation for a deeply sacred encounter.
That history gives the surviving contents particular importance. An empty Sick Call Crucifix can still tell us what it once was; a substantially complete example allows us to see how it actually served the Catholic household.
This example has survived in very good vintage condition. The hardwood body remains exceptionally well preserved, displaying minimal wear for its estimated age, and the concealed interior compartment remains notably clean. The marbled decorative inlays retain their visual character and provide a handsome contrast against the dark wood.
The gold-tone corpus exhibits expected loss to portions of its original gilt finish from age and handling. Rather than diminishing the devotional character of the crucifix, the resulting patina gives the figure the unmistakable appearance of an object that has lived within a Catholic home for decades. The original INRI plaque remains present, and the overall crucifix is well suited to continued display.
For today’s collector, this mid-century Catholic Sick Call Crucifix occupies an important place between devotional object and historical artifact. Such crucifixes preserve a form of Catholic domestic practice that was once familiar in American homes but is encountered less frequently today, particularly with the interior appointments still together.
Displayed in a Catholic prayer room, home altar setting, chapel, rectory, or collection of vintage Catholic sacramentals, it remains a handsome crucifix in its own right. Opened, it tells the fuller story.
It is the story of a household prepared for the priest’s knock at the door; of candles waiting to be lit; of holy water kept ready; and of a family gathering around someone they loved when prayer mattered more than anything else.
A quiet witness to the Catholic home—and to lives lived in faith.
