Background
Born in Assisi around 1181 or 1182, Francis gradually turned from the wealthy life he knew toward a radical following of Jesus in poverty and service. Companions joined him, and Pope Honorius III approved their Rule in 1223, giving formal shape to the Franciscan way of life. During the Crusades, Francis traveled to Egypt and met Sultan al-Kamil in a remarkable effort to cross the lines of conflict. In 1224, while praying on Mount La Verna, Francis received the stigmata, the wounds associated with Christ’s Passion. He died in Assisi in 1226 and was canonized two years later. His witness continues to call Catholics to serve the poor, seek peace, and care reverently for God’s creation.
