Background
In 1720, while seeking God’s direction, Paul Danei withdrew for a forty-day retreat at Castellazzo and began writing a rule for companions devoted to the Passion of Jesus. Years of preaching and perseverance followed before Pope Benedict XIV approved the Passionist Rule in 1741. Paul and his companions then carried their mission through retreats and preaching across Italy, inviting people to keep Christ’s Passion alive in their hearts. For Paul, the Cross revealed the depth of God’s love; his story still calls Catholics to remember that love in prayer and to stand beside those who suffer.
