Biography:

Gregory V became pope through the support of his cousin Emperor Otto III, marking a new phase in which the empire promoted reform-minded leadership at Rome. As the first German pope, he symbolized the widening European character of the papacy.

His pontificate included conflict with Roman factions and temporary displacement, yet he also advanced ecclesiastical discipline and maintained close ties with imperial reform efforts. Under him the papacy began to recover dignity after a dark century.

Gregory V’s reign helped prepare the way for a stronger and more international papacy in the eleventh century.
