Pope Gregory X

Pope Gregory X was born with the given name of Teobaldo Visconti in the year 1210 A.D., and died in 1276 A.D. He began his reign as Pope in the year 1271 A.D. and ended his reign in the year 1276 A.D., during the High Middle Ages. Gregory X was from Piacenza, and his papal number is: 184 out of 267 officially recognized Roman Catholic Popes.

Biography:

Blessed Gregory X came to the papacy after one of the longest interregna in Church history, and he responded by reforming papal elections. His constitution Ubi periculum established the conclave system, one of the most enduring institutional rules of the papacy.

He also convoked the Second Council of Lyon, where reunion with the Greek Church was pursued and major questions of reform and crusade were discussed. Gregory combined spiritual seriousness with practical institutional genius.

His legacy is lasting and profound: he gave the Church a more reliable way to elect popes and embodied the universal horizon of the medieval papacy.
