Biography:Leo X embodied the magnificence and courtly culture of the Renaissance papacy. A Medici prince and patron of letters, he presided over a Rome of ceremonial brilliance and artistic confidence.
Yet his pontificate also coincided with Martin Luther’s challenge and the beginnings of the Protestant Reformation. What began as a dispute over indulgences became a deeper rupture that transformed Western Christianity.
Leo X’s legacy is inseparable from that irony: a splendid Renaissance pope whose age also saw the breakdown of Latin Christian unity.
