Background
The Book of Ruth takes place before Israel’s monarchy, during the era of the judges. When famine strikes, Elimelech takes his family from Bethlehem to Moab. After he and his two sons die, Naomi decides to return home; Ruth, her Moabite daughter-in-law, chooses to go with her. They reach Bethlehem as barley harvest begins, and Ruth gathers grain left behind by the harvesters. Boaz, a relative of Naomi’s late husband, notices Ruth and ensures she is treated safely and generously. Later, when a closer relative declines the family obligation, Boaz accepts it before the town’s elders. Ruth and Boaz’s son, Obed, becomes the grandfather of King David; Matthew’s genealogy also places Ruth in Jesus’ family line. The story centers on loyalty, care for a vulnerable neighbor, and God’s work through ordinary human choices.
