The Invitation | Sunday Gospel, Matthew 22:1–14

by | Oct 20, 2026

Background

As Jesus teaches in Jerusalem, he tells of a king who prepares a wedding feast for his son. The invited guests refuse to come, so the king sends his servants to gather people from the roads and bring them to the banquet. The parable turns a familiar celebration into a searching image of God’s invitation: grace reaches beyond those who expect it, yet receiving the invitation calls for a real response. The wedding garment points to a life shaped by that response—faith expressed in conversion and faithfulness. Catholics hear in the story both the wideness of God’s mercy and a call to live worthily of the kingdom we have been invited to enter.
