Background
In Jerusalem, religious leaders tried to trap Jesus with a question about paying taxes to Rome. The denarius they showed him carried Caesar’s image, making the coin a sign of imperial authority in a land under Roman rule. Jesus answered, “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.” He neither treated the emperor as divine nor dismissed civic responsibility. His words placed every earthly claim beneath our deepest allegiance to God, whose image marks every human person. Catholics can honor legitimate civic duties while measuring public life against God’s justice, human dignity, and the common good.
