The solemn act by which the pope definitively declares that a deceased member of the faithful is a saint and may be venerated in the universal Church. Canonization follows a formal investigation of life, virtues or martyrdom, reputation for holiness, and ordinarily miracles attributed to the candidate’s intercession.
