God’s gracious action by which a sinner is forgiven, made righteous, and brought into friendship with God. Catholic teaching holds that justification is merited by Christ, initially received through faith and Baptism, and involves both the remission of sins and interior renewal by sanctifying grace rather than a merely external declaration.
