Callistus II brought to conclusion one of the medieval Church’s most important conflicts. In 1122 the Concordat of Worms established a compromise that distinguished between spiritual office and temporal investiture, marking a major step in the Church’s struggle for freedom.

He also presided over the First Lateran Council, which ratified the settlement and strengthened reform principles in ecclesiastical law and discipline. Under him the papacy demonstrated both firmness and pragmatic diplomacy.

Callistus II’s legacy is that of a peacemaker who secured a landmark victory for the institutional independence of the Church.
