Pope John XXI

Pope John XXI was born with the given name of Pedro Julião in the year 1215 A.D., and died in 1277 A.D. He began his reign as Pope in the year 1276 A.D. and ended his reign in the year 1277 A.D., during the High Middle Ages. John XXI was from Portugal, and his papal number is: 187 out of 267 officially recognized Roman Catholic Popes.

Summary: Only Portuguese pope, famed for learning as well as governance.

Biography:

John XXI, formerly Pedro Julião, was one of the most learned men to become pope, with interests in medicine, philosophy, and theology. His election showed the high medieval papacy’s esteem for intellectual distinction.

His reign was short and ended tragically when part of the papal palace at Viterbo collapsed. Even so, he pursued ecclesiastical administration with seriousness and brought unusual scholarly prestige to the office.

John XXI remains memorable both for his Portuguese origin and for the rare breadth of his scientific and philosophical reputation.
