Pope Paschal II was born with the given name of Raniero Bieda in the year A.D., and died in A.D. His long reign was marked by negotiation, conflict, temporary concessions, and continued insistence that the Church could not simply be absorbed into secular power. He also dealt with crusading and reform issues across Latin Christendom.

Paschal II’s significance lies in perseverance: he kept the reform papacy active through years when clear victory remained elusive.
