Saint Benedict Crucifix in Cold Cast Bronze – Veronese Collection – 7.75″
At the center is the Cross. It is the same place Saint Benedict placed it centuries ago—not as an ornament, not as a superstition, but as the sign of Christ’s victory and the light by which the Christian life is lived. This Saint Benedict Crucifix in Cold Cast Bronze from the Veronese Collection brings together two of Catholicism’s most recognizable devotional images: the Crucifix of Jesus Christ and the Saint Benedict Medal. Measuring approximately 7.75 inches, the piece is crafted in cold cast bronze with a contrasting pewter-style Corpus, while the reverse of the crucifix displays the back side of the Saint Benedict Medal.
Saint Benedict of Nursia, born around A.D. 480, became one of the great fathers of Western monasticism. His Rule of Saint Benedict shaped communities around prayer, work, obedience, humility, hospitality, and the continual search for God. Its influence would reach far beyond monastery walls and endure across centuries of Christian life. The medal bearing Benedict’s name developed through the Benedictine devotional tradition and contains an extraordinary amount of Christian symbolism. At the heart of its imagery stands the Cross. The familiar initials upon the Saint Benedict Medal represent traditional Latin prayers centered upon the Holy Cross and the rejection of evil and temptation. Among them are the initials for Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux—“May the Holy Cross be my light”—a prayer that captures the deeply Christ-centered character of the devotion. The reverse of the medal, reproduced on the back of this crucifix, traditionally includes an image of Saint Benedict holding the Cross and his Holy Rule, along with other symbols associated with episodes from his life and Benedictine tradition.
The Saint Benedict Medal is not a magical charm, nor does Catholic devotion attribute independent power to the medal itself. It is a sacramental, a sacred sign associated with the prayer of the Church and intended to encourage faith, conversion, resistance to temptation, and confidence in the victory of Jesus Christ. Placed upon a crucifix, its meaning becomes especially clear. The medal does not compete with the Cross. It points toward it.
The piece is crafted from cold cast bronze, allowing detailed sculptural work and the warm, antiqued appearance traditionally associated with bronze religious art. The contrasting pewter-style Corpus of Christ visually distinguishes the figure of the Crucified Lord from the bronze-toned cross and surrounding Saint Benedict imagery. At approximately 7.75 inches, this crucifix is compact enough for a home altar, prayer corner, desk, bookshelf, bedside devotional area, or other sacred space while retaining the presence of a substantial religious sculpture. As part of the Veronese Collection, it is particularly suited for those drawn to detailed Catholic statuary and devotional art. It also makes a meaningful gift for Confirmation, First Holy Communion, OCIA or RCIA reception, housewarmings, ordinations, clergy, religious, Benedictine oblates, and anyone with a devotion to Saint Benedict or the Holy Cross.
The front presents Christ Crucified. The back carries the ancient symbolism of Saint Benedict. But both sides proclaim the same truth: May the Holy Cross be my light.
