An Aramaic word meaning “father,” used by Jesus in prayer and retained in the New Testament to express his filial relationship with God the Father. Christians, through adoption in Christ and the indwelling Holy Spirit, are likewise able to cry, “Abba, Father” (Mark 14:36; Romans 8:15; Galatians 4:6).
