Summary: Pope elected at Constance who restored unity after the Western Schism.

Biography:

Martin V’s election at the Council of Constance ended the Western Schism and restored a universally recognized pope to the Church. His pontificate therefore marks one of the most important recoveries of unity in papal history.

He returned to Rome, rebuilt institutions, and began the long work of restoring papal government after decades of division. The papacy under him was less a triumphant monarchy than a patient restorer of normal life.

Martin V’s legacy is that of reunion, reconstruction, and the reestablishment of the Roman papacy after one of its gravest wounds.
