Biography:

Pius IV achieved one of the most important tasks in early modern Catholic history by bringing the Council of Trent to its conclusion. Under him the council finalized major doctrinal decrees and disciplinary reforms that would shape Catholic life for centuries.

He then began the difficult work of receiving and implementing those reforms in the life of the Church. His pontificate therefore joined conciliar completion with the first steps of post-Tridentine consolidation.

Pius IV’s legacy lies in giving institutional closure to Trent and helping launch the enduring structure of Catholic Reform.
