A prayer or rite by which the Church, in the name and authority of Jesus Christ, asks protection from the power of evil or liberation from demonic influence. A major exorcism may be performed only by a priest who has received specific permission from the local ordinary; minor exorcisms also occur in certain liturgical rites.
