Rite

The Sunday beginning Holy Week, formally called Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord in the Roman Rite. Its liturgy commemorates Christ’s entrance into Jerusalem and proclaims the account of his Passion, joining royal acclamation with the solemn remembrance of his suffering and death.

A manner of distributing Holy Communion in which the consecrated Host is partly dipped into the Precious Blood and placed directly on the communicant’s tongue by the minister. Self-intinction by communicants is not permitted in the Roman Rite.

The penitential liturgical season preparing Christians for Easter through prayer, fasting, almsgiving, repentance, and renewed baptismal commitment. In the Roman Rite it begins on Ash Wednesday and continues until the Mass of the Lord’s Supper exclusive, with the Paschal Triduum forming a distinct liturgical period.

A narrow liturgical vestment formerly worn on the left forearm by certain sacred ministers in the Roman Rite. Its obligatory use was discontinued in the twentieth century; it survives in some celebrations using older liturgical books.
