Pope Pius X was born with the given name of Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto in the year 1835 A.D., and died in 1914 A.D. He began his reign as Pope in the year 1903 A.D. and ended his reign in the year 1914 A.D., during the Modern Papacy. Saint Pius X brought pastoral simplicity and reforming zeal to the early twentieth-century papacy. He promoted frequent communion, encouraged earlier first communion for children, and undertook significant reform of church music and aspects of liturgical life.

He also opposed theological modernism with stern determination, seeing in it a threat to the integrity of Catholic doctrine. His reign combined pastoral renewal with doctrinal vigilance.
