The devotion to the Seven Sorrows contemplates Mary not in abstract privilege but in participatory suffering: Simeon’s prophecy, the flight into Egypt, the loss of the Child Jesus, the meeting on the way to Calvary, the Crucifixion, the Pietà, and the burial. It therefore gives the faithful a Marian path into the mystery of redemptive sorrow.
Rather than cultivating gloom, the devotion purifies compassion. It teaches the Christian to suffer without bitterness, to remain near the Cross, and to see maternal fidelity as a form of courageous discipleship.
How to Practice: Meditate on the seven sorrows with the prescribed prayers or the Servite chaplet. Spiritual Significance: Forms the heart through Mary’s steadfast union with the Passion of Christ.
