Abstinence

A penitential practice of refraining from a particular food or pleasure. In the Latin Church, abstinence ordinarily refers to refraining from meat on designated penitential days, especially Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent, subject to the norms of canon law and legitimate local adaptations.
