A papal declaration permitting public veneration of a deceased servant of God under the title “Blessed,” ordinarily in specified places or communities. Beatification normally follows a canonical investigation of heroic virtue or martyrdom and, except for martyrs, recognition of a miracle attributed to the candidate’s intercession.
